Mini-pupillages

A mini-pupillage at Essex Court Chambers offers the prospective applicant for pupillage an excellent introduction to life at the Commercial Bar. It gives a far better impression of Chambers' work, and of life as a pupil or junior tenant, than any brochure or presentation.

Chambers offers mini-pupillages principally during June and July of each year, although a few are also available during the latter part of September, in exceptional circumstances. We offer mini-pupillages of between 1 and 3 days at the applicant's option. Mini-pupils are paid a fixed sum to cover travelling and other expenses. Applicants will not be considered unless they will, by the time of their mini-pupillage, have completed at least one year of a law degree or have passed, or be in the course of studying for, the Common Professional Examination or Diploma in Law.

Mini-pupils will usually spend time with at least two members of Chambers (one in the earlier years of practice, and one senior junior) in order to be exposed to a variety of work. If a mini-pupil wishes particularly to experience work in a specialist area, such as international arbitration, company law / insolvency, employment / discrimination / human rights law, immigration or EU law, this can usually be accommodated, subject to the workload of the members of Chambers concerned.

Mini-pupillages do not form part of the pupillage selection procedure. However those wishing to be considered for pupillage are expected to undertake a mini-pupillage with us save in exceptional circumstances. All candidates who are offered an interview for pupillage will be offered a mini-pupillage if they have not already undertaken one with us.

The window for mini-pupillage applications is now closed. All applications will be considered together and we will endeavour to inform applicants of the outcome before the end of March 2012.
